A retired Lieutenant Colonel in the California Military Reserve, Supervisor Antonovich firmly believes that “with their service, their sacrifice and courage, our veterans have earned our permanent gratitude and respect."
"We owe our prosperous American way of life to the selfless devotion of our American veterans,” said Antonovich.
VETERANS INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
In 2006, to address a disproportionately high unemployment rate among recent American veterans, Supervisor Antonovich and Supervisor Knabe developed a comprehensive Veterans Internship Program that includes outreach, new hiring protocols and education.
"Our veterans have served our nation and sacrificed their lives for our freedom. Supervisor Knabe and I initiated this program to provide our veterans the opportunity to apply their skills, learn new ones and competeeffectively for employment."
The Los Angeles County Veterans Internship Program is open to local military veterans who have been discharged or released from active duty under honorable conditions. The Department of Human Resources will work to recruit applicants whose training, education and skills match with those needed by the County.
Successful applicants will be hired as temporary trainees for up to 24 months and will receive job training by assisting journey or higher-level workers to enhance previous job skills or gain new experience in administrative, technical, clerical, information technology, skilled craft or heavy maintenance areas. They will receive benefits and are eligible to compete for permanent County positions upon successful completion of program.

"REMEMBERING OUR VETERANS" EVENT
Since 1997, Supervisor Antonovich has hosted his annual “Remembering Our Veterans” event at Arcadia County Park – a day-long tribute to our armed forces, and a presentation of free services to veterans and their families from numerous agencies, including County departments and governmental, independent and private agencies.
“This day gives us the opportunity to remember those who sacrificed allfor freedom and to share our respect for the veterans still living in our community. We remember veterans from World Wars I and II, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and the worldwide war on terror -- thousands of soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines who dedicated themselves to the defense of our country, willingly placing themselves in harm’s way. We will never forget.”
The event includes a presentation of colors, a 21 gun salute, playing of Taps, skydivers, and flyovers by vintage World War II aircraft.
