Description: March 19, 2011—Los Angeles County Supervisor joined the Crescenta Valley Town Council, Department of Parks and Recreation and the community in celebrating the 139th anniversary of Arbor Day.

The first Arbor Day took place on April 10, 1872 in Nebraska, initiated by Julius Sterling Morton, Secretary of Agriculture under President Grover Cleveland.

Morton proposed a day dedicated to tree planting and increasing awareness of the importance of trees for our nation’s economic vitality.

More than one million trees were planted on Nebraska’s first arbor day -- on April 22 to coincide with Morton’s birthday.

In 1970, President Richard Nixon proclaimed the last Friday in April as National Arbor Day.

Arbor Day is also now celebrated in Australia, Israel, Japan, and Korea.

One way we celebrate Arbor Day is to support efforts to protect our trees and woodlands.

Trees are a renewable resource giving us paper for our work and wood for our homes.

“Today, we symbolically plant a tree of unity, a reminder to the community that we should grow together and live harmoniously,” said Antonovich.
